Our Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour journey begins at 9:00 a.m., with a comfortable drive from Cusco to Moray (approx. 1.5 hours). Once there, discover the circular terraces of Moray, an Inca agricultural laboratory designed to experiment with crops at different altitudes and climates. Learn from your expert guide how the Incas adapted agriculture in this high-altitude region, and enjoy time to walk, explore, and take incredible pictures.
Next, continue to the Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras), where over 4,000 salt pools stretch across the hillside. Since pre-Inca times, local families have been using this centuries-old site to harvest salt by hand. Walk through the salt flats as your guide explains the traditional salt extraction process and its importance to the local economy and culture.
Before returning to Cusco city, enjoy a final stop in Chinchero, a picturesque Andean village known for its rich textile traditions. Here, you’ll visit a weaving center, where locals demonstrate ancient dyeing and weaving techniques using natural materials—an unforgettable cultural experience.
You’ll arrive back in Cusco around 3:00 p.m., filled with memories and a deeper understanding of the Inca legacy and local traditions that still thrive today. It is completely possible to take you to Ollantaytambo train station instead of going back to Cusco.

- SUN PROTECTION – Sunglasses (polarized recommended), sunscreen, and 45 SPF lip balm are an absolute must.
- POCKET KNIFE – We brought along a small Swiss Army Knife which came in handy here and there. This should be considered optional, but we recommend hiking with one.
- PACK COVER – We suggest having pack covers because they can help with the rain protection. Ziploc bags also come in handy. Rain could happen any time.
- TREKKING POLES (optional) – We recommend hiking with trekking poles, many hikers in Peru do. If you have bad knees/ankles they can help reduce strain on big ascents and descents.
