OUR HEAD PORTER AND WAITER
Hello! My name is Paulino. I was born in Willoq, a small community nestled in the beautiful mountains of Cusco. Growing up in a large family, I learned the values of hard work and togetherness from a young age. My parents instilled in me a deep respect for our land, and I have spent most of my life as a farmer, nurturing the close connection to the earth and our traditions.
In addition to my farming experience, I also work as a cook on the Inca Trail. Over the past seven years, I have honed my culinary skills, blending traditional recipes with fresh, local ingredients. Though I initially had limited access to formal education, I pursued opportunities to learn and develop my abilities in the kitchen, and I am proud of the journey I’ve taken to become a chef.
Every day, whether I’m farming or cooking for travelers, I am reminded of the rich history and culture that shape who I am. It is important for me to honor my roots while also sharing the flavors of our heritage with others and supporting my family and community.
WILSON HUAMAN
HEAD PORTER AND DRIVER
Wilson. I was born in Qorao, a small community nestled in the mountains of Cusco. Growing up in a large family, I learned the values of hard work and unity from a young age. My parents instilled in me a strong connection to our land, culture and traditions, which have shaped my life.
Today, I live in Cusco, where I work as a driver. This role allows me to explore the beautiful landscapes of my homeland while supporting my family. I have two wonderful children who inspire me to provide them with a better future. Though I have had limited formal education, my experiences on the road have taught me many valuable lessons about resilience and the importance of community.
I take great pride in being a part of the rich heritage of my culture and strive to share these values with my children.
NEMESIO CUSI
HEAD PORTER
My name is Nemesio, I was born in the most traditional Andean community, Willoq-Patacancha, and I have lived in the stunning mountains of Ollantaytambo and along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu for my entire life. I am nearly sixty years old. Having a large family taught me the importance of hard work. I have learned the value of perseverance and commitment from my work as a head porter and farmer on the Inca Trail over the years.
Having five kids, both boys and girls, makes me proud. I am extremely proud of all three of them for their successful completion of their university education. But my journey is far from over. I am determined to make sure my other 2 kids can take advantage of higher education as well.
Since I think that education is the key to a better future for my family, I keep working hard every day. I try to encourage my kids to appreciate education, honor our customs, and seize every chance life presents.
